Thursday, May 18, 2006

i'm not a big pillow person, namely because i don't have a sofa or couch or chaise lounge to put any pillows on...BUT if i did!!! i would stock up on some pretty pillows.

like this awesome tree one from frauliebe! i'm not a hippie, but i'd love to hug this tree! limited edition, $37.00.

and of course to match this Princess Tina owl embroidered pillow. too cute to not give a hoot, $55.00.

and one of these log cabin pillows from Curious Bird! how do you make these things, $45.00.

apartment hunting

here's a glorious view of just one of the istanbul cityscapes taken from across the Golden Horn (with a view of the Galata Tower and Karakoy neighborhood. this was taken last March!

we've been trying to figure out which neighborhoods to look in for an apartment. samet's work is in zeytinburnu (which is halfway to the airport), so it's away from the main city centers. istanbul is split up as a "European Side" and an "Asian Side", since it straddles two continents, that's literally what it means. but there's also a slight change in the atmospheres of each side. i kind of like to think if it is Manhattan and Brooklyn. the European Side is where all the tourists and siteseerers are, where everyone shuffles to work in, the Asian side a little bit more quiet, and small shops and mostly people returning from work.

we'll be living in the European Side, only because it's closer to work (public transportation consists of buses, metros, tramways, ferries, taxis and you can end up taking any combination...most likely at least 2...of these to get to where you are going). neighborhoods we haven't decided on yet...more about that later.

i can't do too much while i am here except troll the internet for apartments. istanbul has a craig's list! although i don't think the turkish have grasped onto what craig's list is yet as there is a derth of information on the site. nonetheless, there are a few apartment posting, including this dream 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom (look at the potential!) renovated flat right off a main street (though too expensive for us...$1400USD/month).

unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, searching for an apartment in istanbul is much like searching for an apartment in New York. they have brokers, slum landlords, deposits, all about location location location...rent prices can almost end up being the same as what you pay here. though i am determined to find a diamond in the rough!

shop till you move

Wednesday, May 17, 2006

i'm in the process of updating the site with new items, consignment payments, and cleaning out my room. who knew cleaning out your closet could be such a task! i'm thinking any decisive person could do this in a matter of hours, but for me it becomes a matter of days...then weeks...with clothes strewn about everywhere. my pile of "to keep" and "not to keep" keep getting blurred and mixed around as i reminesce and think that i really ought to keep that vintage dress i haven't worn in a year...or ever! i need to learn to let go!

instantly though my mind lets go but feels a need to replenish by shopping even more! i won't even go into the clothes parts, but i've been hankering to spend money. maybe it's the changing of the seasons, or maybe it's because i feel like i won't be doing any personal shopping in istanbul or maybe it's because i feel like i won't be able to buy certain things while i'm there. i found these great moving postcards at boygirlparty.

though i won't be able to fill them out yet until i actually get an apartment in istanbul...but i'm thinking maybe as a change of address to send to my consigners.

and i've been loading up on home decorating on a budget books.

help!!

introduction

i officially now have 3 blogs. in some ways, they all represent 3 different aspects of my life, but i felt the need to start this one to document my upcoming move and stay in istanbul. eventually, perhaps, all 3 blogs will be consolidated into this one here which i hope will be an accurate unflinching detail into my life! so much for the first post! more to come as the stress countdown begins.
